Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria (in Spanish meaning 'Great Island of Dogs') is one of the Canary Islands situated about 90 miles off the north-western coast of Africa. It is a volcanic island but the last recorded eruption was over 3000 years ago. Being volcanic the interior is very different from the coastal strip, well known by tourists, but the walking is tough with steep climbs but rewarding views. In the south are famed dune areas offering yellow sandy beaches - rare in the Canary Island Group.

Why island of dogs? Yes there are dogs in the resorts scavenging through the rubbish bins but not in sufficient numbers to be a 'Great Island of Dogs' today.
